Connecting with the world through language

Students who study foreign languages have had a number of opportunities to learn more about the cultures they study.

Earlier this summer, students embarked on a journey to Peru with biology teacher D.C. Randle and Spanish teacher Lydia Scheiber. At the same time, Steve Sebald’s German students spent three weeks in Germany, living with host families, attending school and exploring the country.

“Its a great way to experience different cultures first hand and to get perspectives on different cultures, as well as your own,” said Sebald. “My hope is that the exchange students will stay connected with the people they meet, through Facebook or Skype.”

In the early weeks of the school year, 16 students and two teachers from the school in Berlin, some of whom hosted SFHS students, spent three weeks in St. Francis in the exchange.

“The Germans are excited to be here,” said German teacher, Steve Sebald, during the German students’ stay, “It should be a good time for all of us.”

The German students and teachers lived with host families and spent their time learning about high school in America and going on field trips to explore Minnesota. Over their three-week stay, they visited the State Capitol, went to Duluth, and attended a Twins game as well as doing many other activities with their host families.

“This also gives the students a chance to meet a new friend for life,” said Sebald.
