Reviewing of the Creed

Assassin’s Creed III is the newest game in the Assassin’s Creed series, and is a whole new experience compared to all of the other games preceding it. In many ways, though, it stays in touch with its roots.

“In the name of liberty, I will fight the enemy regardless of their allegiance. While men of courage write history of this day, the future of our land depends on those who are truly free.” said Ratonhnhaké:ton (Connor.)

When the story begins we open on the link between each game, Desmond Miles, as he and his group try to find a new place to put the Animus and begin digging into Miles’ past. The Animus, introduced in the first game, is a machine that taps into the subject’s DNA, in this case it’s Miles, and then begins to read it for the memories of the subject’s ancestors. In the first game, Assassin’s Creed, this is how Miles discovered his heritage as an Assassin. The Assassins are a group of people who fight for justice, and try to make the world a better place. The group fighting against the Assassins are the Templars. The Templars have the same goal of making the world a better place, but the way they go about it isn’t exactly legal. First we saw life through Altair who fought the Templars and his own master, and obtained The Apple of Eden, which is an all powerful tool that’s supposed to help stop the end of the world. After that we met Ezio Auditore and followed him and his story through the next three games.

Now in Assassin’s Creed III we follow a Native American named Ratonhnhaké:ton, who also goes by the name of Connor, but instead of opening on Connor, we meet his father first. Not only that, instead of opening with an Assassin, Connor’s father is also a Templar. Taking place during the Revolutionary War; tensions are running high, and Connor seeks to save his people, represent the Assassins, take revenge on his father and keep the newly colonized United States from falling apart.

This addition to the Assassin’s Creed game line is just as good, or even better, than all of the others. Even though the game’s designers, producers, animators and all of the others involved changed so much for Assassin’s Creed III, and in a way they seem to have started over completely. The game runs on a different engine, meaning all of the actions and various looks are different from any of the last games, character controls are different, and the story is different from what a fan would expect. This story is constant with the rest in the Assassin’s Creed game line and seems to not create any plot holes.

The different engine the game runs on is apparent even in the game-play trailers, because compared to the last game, Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, the graphics are not as detailed. They do make up for this though by adding more in depth missions, like beginning as a Templar, and using this to build more in depth characters. The new engine also gives this game an advantage; Assassin’s Creed III has more to it than the other games. For instance the loading screens, like in the other games, are interactive, and like the rest it has designs moving around in the background. I have to say it is much more impressive than the rest, because on these loading screens there are triangular mirror floating around. Not only can they be cool to look at; each mirror reflects the character being played and their movements. Creating a sort of ominous atmosphere while waiting for the game to load.

The controls of this game are very different from the rest, and for veterans to the Assassin’s Creed games, like myself, this can be kind of tough to get used to. They are otherwise very fluent, concise and makes it feel like anyone playing is actually Connor himself. Another new thing to this series is quick time events, which is during a cutscene time slows down and buttons appear on the screen. When they appear pressing the button allows the scene to move forward, and allowing your character to avoid any damage from dangerous foe. This, in my opinion, makes stories more in depth, and give the feeling that the game is real.

Assassin’s Creed III keeps in touch with the other games, and seems to have no conflicting points with any of the other storylines from the other games. Also it continues to improve the Assassin’s Creed line of games by making a change for the better. I hope they continue in this direction like they seem to have in the past. These games are always fun to play and watch; even if anyone hasn’t played any of the previous games Assassin’s Creed III does a good job of catching everyone up with the story so far. Also bringing people into Connor’s story; then creating the level of excitement, and a sort of realism, to the player. Assassin’s Creed III is good for those new to the series, and for those who have come to love all of the charms the series has. I would tell anyone who asked to at the very least give it a try.
