Pet Corner – Hedgehog

Pet Corner - Hedgehog

Since her sophomore year, senior Brittany Galbrecht has had the privilege of caring for science teacher D.C. Randle’s class hedgehog. That’s how she realized she loved hedgehogs and needed one to call her own.
“They are so cute and I love their personalities,” said Galbrecht “It’s so funny to watch him run around and burrow under stuff.”
Finding a hedgehog was a bigger struggle than she assumed it would be. In the search for one, she checked and got rejected by all the local pet stores, so she decided to start her search online. After awhile, one of her friends knew she wanted one and knew someone who just had a litter of hoglets. After buying all the supplies needed, she went to Coon Rapids to claim her future hedgehog.
“I was so excited to finally have my own,” said Galbrecht. “Before going to get him I decided on the name Charlie.”
When Galbrecht got Charlie, he was smaller than her palm, but he quickly grew to the normal size of a hedgehog, which is about five inches. He eats a mixture of cat food and Complete brand hedgehog food.
“For such a little guy he eats so much,” said Galbrecht.
Since they are nocturnal animals, most of their activity happens at night. During the day he basically just sleeps and gets taken out by his owner. Sometimes, when his wheel is getting cleaned, he’ll get bored and tip over everything in his cage.
“He runs on it a lot at night, so he’s kind of loud,” Galbrecht said fondly.. “But hedgehogs need attention just like any other animal
