Pet Corner with Alex Dequaine

About two to three months ago Alex Dequaine decided he wanted to get his favorite animal as a pet. So Alex went to a farm in Hackensack, Minnesota called Norway Pines Game Farm, which raises and sells peacocks. He got three Indian Blue – two female and one male peacock. The Indian Blue are native to South Asia, but are commonly found in the United States now.
“They have very beautiful coloring and they make such unique noises from other birds,” said Dequaine.
Peacocks make a variety of different noises, depending on what they’re trying to do. For example, the bird will make an eerie, high-pitched noise which sounds like a baby crying as a mating call. One of the more common sounds they make it a loud “pia-ow” or “may-awe”noise. They make those noises to alert the other birds of predators that are near.
The birds are pretty easy to take care of; they just need to be watered daily and fed game bird mix. As a treat, the peacocks will get fed crickets that are let loose in their cage. Peacocks can also eat a wide variety of other food like insects, fruits, small mammals, and reptiles.
“They will peck the ground to catch the crickets,” said Alex
Out of the three birds, Alex’s favorite is the male named Pete. Pete has a metallic blue coloring for his body and a huge set of bronze-green feathers that have black and copper markings on them.
“Pete has the coolest coloring of out the three birds,” said Alex.
