New hedgehog comes to school

Over the summer, Oliver, the biology department’s hedgehog belonging to teacher D.C Randle became sick and died. The good news is Randle did end up getting a new hedgehog to take Oliver’s place.
“It was really sad when Oliver died because all the kids loved him so much,” said Randle.
During the middle of August Oliver was brought into the Elm Creek Animal Hospital because he had open wounds on his legs and chin. The vet said he had a staph infection  which is very common in hedgehogs, but sometimes can be fatal. The vet gave Oliver an oral antibiotic.
Randle went into the school on August 28th to give Oliver his medicine, but he refused to take it, so Randle left Oliver, but checked on him later that morning. When he returned, Oliver had died. Randle concluded that Oliver died from his staph infection. Now Oliver is peacefully resting in Randle’s yard under an Oak tree.
“I was so surprised when I heard Oliver had died. I thought he was actually getting better,” said junior, Brittany Galbrecht. Brittany brought Oliver home over the summer and was the one who noticed the wounds on his legs and chin.
After Oliver’s death Randle decided to get a new hedgehog because everyone loved Oliver so much. He contacted the Jacobsons, a family who breeds hedgehogs and had given him Oliver. Early in  September, the family brought Randle a new prickly bundle of joy to take Oliver’s place. She is four years old and is a brown color with some white. She was given the name Peaches since she didn’t have a name when she was given to Randle.
“Getting to play with Peaches makes me wanna beg the ‘rents for one,” said senior Jasmine Lankford. “She is just darling.”
