When Cody Wald was a freshman, coaches told him he would only get to play ninth grade basketball. They changed their minds when they saw his talent on the court. It didn’t take long for Wald to go from freshman ball player to varsity starter.
Wald was nervous, but excited to be offered playing time at the varsity level. However, it was something he’d been working toward for years. In fact, Head Coach Ryan Hauge said he saw potential in Cody by fifth grade, when Wald attended summer basketball camps. As an eighth grader, Wald played ninth grade ball and was outscoring opponents by sometimes as much as 20 points.
“Cody is a true point guard. He fills his role really well and understands the game,” Hauge said.
Wald says he owes a lot of his success to his parents, whom he thanks greatly for allowing him to be in the gym all the time.

“They would drive me there and pick me up all the time, whenever I asked,” said Wald.

Over the years, Wald has not limited himself to school teams. He has also participated in AAU (Amateur Athletic Union), receiving scholarships to summer teams like Minnesota Heat. He has also played in elite showcases like ESPN Elite 80 and Scout Focus, where he has been recognized as a top player in the region for his age and ability. College scouts come to the showcases to look for talent from the top players in the state.

“My goal is to get recognized in the state and hopefully get a scholarship.” said Wald.

With every season comes players and teams who pose a challenge. For Wald, Benilde St. Margaret is the school he is waiting for. Wald’s teammates hold him in high regards.

“He comes up big for us when we need him,” said junior Ben Monnier. Wald keeps his team’s spirits up both on and off the court.

“It’s fun watching him dance in the locker room,” said senior Conner Marquette.

Along with his success came his love for the game, developed at a young age. Growing up with a basketball in his hand, there wasn’t a place he would not be dribbling. It paid off for him, In his second game this season verses Becker, he didn’t turn the ball over one time which is a great accomplishment.

“My favorite memory so far was being brought along to the Detroit Lakes Tournament last winter “ said Wald “ I hope to create a memory much greater in the next two years.”
