During the summer of 2012, 85 soon-to-be senior students gathered in the school’s Performing Arts Center (PAC) to discuss possible changes in the upcoming school year, an event that has been hosted since 2001.

“The purpose of Senior Summit is to meet with upcoming seniors and discuss ways to improve our school,” said Principal Paul Neubauer.

Of course not every student demand or suggestion can be met, but a solution to make it easier was developed.

“We brainstorm a list and then divide the items into categories of difficulty,” said Neubauer.

This list includes easy things to do, like pre-pay activity cards to get students into games, things that are do-able but may require more time to accomplish, like the suggestion of adding a larger variety of college courses and the last category is something that is not possible yet, but may be in the future.

“I went because I wanted to try and change the school,” said senior Sam Wellman.

With a turnout of ten more students this year than in past years, according to Neubauer, plenty of ideas came out of the gathering this year. Among the topics discussed were: bullying, adding a Chinese or American Sign Language [ASL] course and even just talking about better ways to welcome the freshmen into the school to set a good example.

“I heard you could find ways to make the school better and make more opportunities,” said senior Alex Troye. “I don’t think it [change] will happen now, but I think things will change over time.”
