Invasion of the posers: Internet meme gone too far

Invasion+of+the+posers%3A+Internet+meme+gone+too+far

There are certain things that just drive me mad for instance: not signaling a turn, saying Playstation is better than Xbox, bad grammar and the sound of cracking knuckles. What really grinds my gears is these so-called “gamer girls” that claim to be so into what most would call “nerd culture.”

To prove that I am not one of these “gamer girls” I will give some of my gaming history. The first counsel I had was a Sega Genesis where my family and I mostly played Sonic games. I was very young, and I didn’t spend much time on it. Then came the Nintendo 64 my favorite game was Super Mario 64 where I had gotten a score of 120 stars. Many years had passed, and my family mainly stuck to Nintendo because they are known to be family friendly. My Freshman year of high school I had discovered the magic of Microsoft’s Xbox, (I have played many hours on Playstation as well, but I maintain Xbox is significantly better.) I became more serious about gaming. More proof of that is to look at my bank account, because gaming is not a cheap endeavor.

Now, these “gamer girls” put on a headset, hold a controller and think, “wow, look at me I’m a gamer.” That is not how it works because I could run circle around them in any game. Even those cheesy kid games, but why do they claim they are so awesome at gaming? Is the question I ask because up until recently my nerdy little qualms were constantly being ridiculed by others.

This may not be the true answer, but I believe it has to do with this “Hipster Movement”. (I’m not sure what it’s called) Suddenly what was cool isn’t and what isn’t is cool…Thinking about it makes my head hurt a bit. What do the people who have dedicated a lot of time and effort into their skill and knowledge do when the world is flipped upside down; I don’t know about everyone else but it makes my blood boil. These “gamer girls” don’t know much about any genre, style, mechanics or even the history behind a game. (There are often game prequels in the form of books and/or videos). Putting on a nerdy T-shirt, headset and/or holding a controller taking a photo of yourself to post on the internet. Doesn’t make you a nerd, gamer or anything else just, what most call, a poser.

My point is, don’t claim to be something you’re not, because that’s how people get into a whole heap of trouble. If any “gamer girl” out there thinks they are, in fact, a gamer. Then take about five minutes to talk with a person like myself, and if any “gamer girl” can’t last that. One must face a Dremora Lord and hope Andraste saves her, because the Arisen isn’t going to help.
