Dress up days add spirit to spirit week

Spirit week: five craze-filled school days where the students can show their school spirit.

Walking through the hallways last week, I could already tell what week had just begun and what theme day it was.

I have always enjoyed seeing how many people would actually participate in the themed days. I, for one, always enjoyed dressing-up, because it’s usually not socially acceptable to randomly wear, let’s say, footie pajamas and a tie.

Some students even take a theme into their own hands. For the past four years, a small group of students have chosen one of the days to dress up as pirates. Even though they weren’t going with the camo/blaze orange theme, they still added to the school spirit.

It’s just exciting to have a day where the school has some kind of weird bonding thing and dresses similarly.

This Homecoming we had new themes added to our list, and it seemed to me, more people actually dressed up. One of the new themes was Mustache, Tacky-Tie, and Duct-Tape Day. I was actually looking forward to seeing this day, for I didn’t know how involved people would be. But everywhere I turned I saw either a fake mustache, random or full pieces of duct-tape, a tacky tie or any variation of the three.

Students aren’t the only ones who participated. The staff also got involved. German teacher Steve Sebald had duct-tape lederhosen and Ted Gehring from social studies got creative with camo day and dressed as part of the wall outside of his classroom in beige with a black line running down his clothes.

Although some people may not participate, I don’t think it’s a waste of time. This year, so far, has been the best out of my high-school career. Even if I don’t own blaze orange or camo, it’s still amusing to see people dressed up in it.
