Varsity volleyball works through turbulent times

Team captains share leadership strategies and hopes for the season

With a record of 5-6, SFHS varsity volleyball captains Amelia Johnson, Rachel Owens, and Madison Rzeszutek share what it is like to be leaders for the volleyball team through hard season like this.

“Even in tough times, being a volleyball captain is such an honor,” said senior captain Amelia Johnson. “I love knowing that all the younger girls and my teammates look up to me because it creates a drive to work even harder.”

Although the record isn’t where they hoped it would be right now, Johnson still feels it has been a good year.

“Compared to the beginning of the season, we have learned a lot and we have grown together as a team,” she said, ” which makes playing together on the court really fun.”

Senior captain Rachel Owens agrees with Johnson about the team chemistry.

“I think we have a close team,” said Owens. “We all get along, but occasionally we need to regroup and play as a team.”

Owens was thrilled to be named captain.

“I do anything I can to make the team better by helping, encouraging, and just being a leader on and off the court,” she said.

Owens tries to help her team stay motivated and focused through good and bad times.

“I always try and encourage my teammates after every play-good or bad,” she said. “Also by making sure to keep a positive attitude.”

Being the person everyone looks up to and the person people come to for advice is Rzeszutek’s favorite part of being a senior captain. She is hopeful that the season will end with everyone playing together and also playing consistent volleyball.

“Keeping a positive attitude and giving encouragement helps keep the players focused and motivated,” she said.

Johnson still thinks the team could make it far in sections.

“I think we have the potential to do great things now that we are getting the feel of playing together,” she said. “Hopefully we end my senior year in a big way.”
